Re-Imagining Peer Review Survey
CELJ is conducting a survey on journal-based peer review in the humanities and humanistically oriented social sciences (HSS). This survey, funded by the Mellon Foundation, is meant to establish a better understanding of how H/HSS journal publishing stakeholders view different peer-review models and methods and to gauge their experiences with anti-racism, diversity, and inclusion efforts in peer-review processes. This information will be made public in a report based on the data set and used to inform a series of workshops.
Participants can take the survey from whichever role they most identify with—author, reviewer, editor, or publisher. The surveys differ for each role. Respondents in the US who complete the survey will be compensated with a $50 gift certificate to Bookshop.org. Respondents outside the US will receive an equivalent gift certificate.
***UPDATE as of 11/24/25: We paused the survey because we received over 3,000 scam responses. We are manually reviewing the responses to ensure legitimate respondents get through. This will take some time. We are adding security measures before we re-open the survey. Thanks for your patience!
